Tabby Callaghan

Tabby is 23 years of age and a full time musician from Sligo, Ireland. He formed his own band at the age of eight and subsequently went on to form another group at the age of twelve with Kian Egan, now of Westlife. At a later date Tabby formed another band going by the name of 'Petronella' which had hits in the Irish top 30 charts on two occasions. With his latest band, 'DZ5' they entered The X Factor auditions but at the judges' discretion, Tabby was forced to depart from his fellow members. Tabby spoke of this situation: "The judges told me they weren't into the band and said if I wanted I could come back on my own. I went away and had a chat with the lads. They told me to go for it. They're not jealous. They're 100% behind me and they're coming over for the first live show on Saturday. I've had opportunities in the past and regretted not taking them. I'm doing it for my son - he's all I think about. It's hard being away from him and Anna [Tabby's girlfriend] but it makes you appreciate it more when you do see them." Tabby spoke of his worst X Factor moment: "I had to sing a Beatles song and I forgot the words. My mind just turned to mush. I was convinced I'd blown it."

Q & As
Occupation? Full time musician
Any formal singing training? Never.
What part of The X Factor do you have? All I know is if I walk down a street I always get people staring at me, even strangers that don’t know me ask me what I play and what band I’m in. I know it sounds really cringingly embarrassing and arrogant but I’ve been told I had x factor and I never knew what it was so it’s weird to be on this show.
Why will people vote for you? Because I’m a genuine musician I’ve busted my a*se for the past 13 years. I write and record all my own stuff. I’ve played every toilet with electricity and I truly, truly am passionate about music. It’s my life. I’ve never done anything else and I never want to do anything else. I’ve spent the better part of my life being broke because of it. It’s what I do y’know?
What’s the best thing about your judge? I wouldn’t know where to begin because she’s incredible. First of all she’s kind, she’s sharp, she’s incredibly precise, plus just look at her history. Ozzy Osbourne, I love him. Also because she’s just a damn good woman. Don’t get me wrong, she’ll cut you in half as quick as look at you, make no bones about it but just make sure you stay on her right side!
Why are you glad you didn’t get the other two? Louis wouldn’t know what to do with me and Simon would never in a million years understand me, my art form or what I do. It’d be pointless.
What are your personal goals? I want to be a successful musician. Now, successful is different to famous. I want to be successful for my own music not for selling some pansy songs or any kind of crap like that .I just want to play my guitar and entertain the people. That’s all.
Last CD you bought? Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder. It’s excellent.
What music would we be surprised that you own? I have a wall of 500 CDs. I love Johnny Cash, I’ve got total respect for the man. I have The Braveheart soundtrack which is unbelievable. Anything by John Horner is incredible, the classical pieces are beautiful.
Which artist do you most resemble or identify with? I’d have to say Jimmy Hendrix for the pizzazz, Jagger for quirkiness and from a song writing point of view…. there are so many people who touch me as songwriters. Van Morrison, he touches something in me when I hear him.
What do you sing in the shower? Anything. TV ads!
What’s one thing that would surprise the public about you? That I have a 5 month old son, I absolutely adore him to bits. Illan and Anna are the most important things in my life. And I suppose that I’m completely down to earth about everything and that I’ve a lot of respect for people.
If you make it big what will your Diva Demand be? A stack of Vox AC30 amplifiers, they make the Brian May sound, also a row of guitars.
