Steve Brookstein

Steve is a 35 year old full time singer from South London. He has been performing in pubs and clubs for a number of years and has had the opportunity to support Dionne Warwick in concert. He's also appeared on Jonathan Ross' 'Big Big Talent Show'. Steve spoke of The X Factor experience: "I find it quite weird at the moment because I keep going into bars and complete strangers want to hug me. I have found the whole experience of being on the show surreal from day one." Speaking about Simon Cowell's opinion that he was very like Will Young, Steve said: "I can probably see that. Will was quite nervous to start then came on. I'm feeling more confident and showing a little bit of what I can do as I go along. It's a nice complement to get because Will did quite well, didn't he?"

Q & As
Occupation? Singer.
Any formal singing training? Yes, when I was 22 for 2 years.
What part of The X Factor do you have? If I’m honest I don’t know why, but the ladies seem to like the smile. I think they think I’m a bit cheeky and boyish and a little bit fun. I’m probably wrong!
Why will people vote for you? I’m hoping there will be a lot of people who like the music that I was brought up on, 70’s and 80’s soul music. Anything from George Benson to Marvin Gaye, I was brought up with soulful songs.
What’s the best thing about your judge? At the moment, his credibility.
Why are you glad you didn’t get the other two? I’m glad I didn’t get Louis because initially he didn’t like me, he didn’t know if I had it. He thought I’d be late and unreliable. Sharon, I think was a little bit like that, but in the end I don’t know if she thought I had any appeal.
What are your personal goals? I want to record an album regardless of what happens with The X Factor. It was actually my goal at the beginning of the year whether I did it at home with my own set up or maybe it will happen here.
Last CD you bought? Anthony Hamilton, it’s a wicked album, it’s R n B and it’s really cool. I saw his single, Charlene, on MTV Base so I bought the album.
What music would we be surprised that you own? I think they would be surprised that I like Frank Sinatra, I was brought up on him. My favourite songs as a kid were It Happened in Monteray and Making Whoopee.
Which artist do you most resemble/ identify with? Musically I get compared to Michael McDonald and Luther Vandross.
What do you sing in the shower? I don’t really sing in the shower, I do warm ups I suppose.
What’s one thing that would surprise the public about you? That I really like to sing falsetto. People love to hear me singing deep but I really do enjoy doing Al Green and all the stylistics singing really high.
If you could have just one Diva Demand? Can I ask for anything I want? I would like a personal masseuse. That would be wicked.
