Rowetta Satchell

Rowetta is a 38 year old backing vocalist from Manchester. She's been a backing singer with the band, Happy Mondays and had a brief relationship with band lead, Shaun Ryder. She has also backed a number of other bands including Groove Armada. She has also appeared in the film, '24 Hour Party People'. Rowetta spoke of how she's been perceived as 'mad': "Simon [Cowell] has said I'm unsafe, unstable and completely barking mad. I just think it's really funny. The response from people since I've been in the show has been brilliant. They keep saying 'It's great to see you're not as mad as they're making out'. Nobody's as mad as they look on TV. I was a little bit mad on my first audition but lots of stars are mad, aren't they? It's better than being boring." And speaking about the band Happy Mondays, Rowetta said: "I don't really speak to Shaun but the others have been really supportive. Bez and Paul are like my brothers and they're big fans of the show. Every week they're ringing me up and say 'Don't tell me if you're through - we want to watch it'."

Q & As
Occupation? Backing singer.
Any formal singing training? No.
What part of The X Factor do you have? I’m confident and unpredictable, I’ve got personality, by the way I was reading Simon Cowell’s book and these are all the things he mentioned and I thought, I’ve got that. Charisma, stage presence, talent and individuality. I don’t look like everybody else.
Why will people vote for you? Hopefully for all those reasons but also because I’ve got a good voice. I’m not your bland boring average normal singer. They’ll either love that or they’ll hate me. I’m outgoing and honest.
What’s the best thing about your judge? I respect him so much; some of the things he says are really great. When he gave me a compliment I thought, ‘this is what I’ve come into this competition for’. I don’t think any of the other judges would have done that. He said everything I wanted to hear. That’s why you enter these competitions, for Simon Cowell to say you’re great. I’m the one he winks at - either I’m his favourite or he fancies me!
Why are you glad you didn’t get the other two? For a start Louis said I was too mad and too unmanageable so I couldn’t have worked with him, Simon saw through that. I think Sharon embraces a bit of nuttiness, I think she’s a bit loony herself so I wouldn’t have a problem with her.
What are your personal goals? I just want to be known as a great singer, I would like to be nominated for an award for one of the best female singers. I’ve not been able to be a solo singer; I’ve been stuck in the back while my children were growing up so this is the first time I’m able to do it with confidence.
What was the last CD you bought? I’ve been downloading music. It was probably She Will be Loved, by Maroon 5 which I was doing for one of my auditions. I cried when I heard it because it’s a beautiful, beautiful song.
What music would we be surprised that you own? I own a lot of theme music from CD’s of favourite Nursery Rhymes to The Sound of Music, it was for the kids but I like it as well.
Which artist do you most resemble/ identify with? Etta James, I think she’s brilliant and she’s had a sh**ty life like me.
What do you sing in the shower? I never sing in the shower. Never. I sing everywhere else.
What’s one thing that would surprise the public about you? That I’m a good mother, I made sure my kids went to grammar school I brought them up on my own and came from nothing to where I am now. They’re in their 20s, well spoken with great manners, both work and have never been on the dole. Also my house is lovely and I think people would be surprised by that.
What would be your one Diva Demand? Young boys fanning me because I get really hot.
