Lulu is one of the greatest British artists today. Ronan did a duet recently with Lulu called 'We've Got Tonight'. Here's a short biography of who Lulu is...
Lulu, was born Marie MacDonald McLaughlin Lawrie on the 3rd November 1948 at Lennox Castle, Glasgow, Scotland. She began her musical presence doing vocals for band, The Luwers made up of other members: Jim Dewar, Ross Nelson, Jimmy Smith, Alec Bell, Tony Tierney and David Miller. But most will probably best remember Lulu's debut through her performance of 'Shout', a cover of the original version performed by the Isley Brothers. This single came out in 1964, when Lulu was only 15 years of age. The struggle for popularity struck Lulu in her debut years. Out of a total of eight singles she released, only two claimed a worthy charting position. Lulu departed The Luwers and through a shift of record labels that included Decca and EMI/Columbia Records she emerged under the eye of producer, Mickie Most, with a successful single in 1967, 'The Boat That I Row', a cover of the original version recorded by Neil Diamond. She also had the opportunity to take on an acting role in the film, 'To Sir With Love'. Through her performance of the theme music to this film she gained a highly popular US No.1 single while in the UK it reached a respectable No.6 position. In the UK she acquired more hit singles that included: 'Let's Pretend', 'The Peaceful Heart' and 'Me' for example. |
| Lulu became an icon in entertainment as well as music and she took to presenting her own television show. She also represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest with the tied-first place winner, 'Boom-Bang-A-Bang' which also scored a UK No.2 chart position. Lulu got married to member of the Bee Gees, Maurice Gibb, but this was short-lived and following was a period of poor single sales before she returned with 'The Man Who Sold The World', produced and arranged by the great David Bowie. Lulu took to entertainment and stage performances through the 1970's. She made appearances in 'Guys And Dolls' and on television in the series, 'The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole'. In 1986, Lulu rereleased a revamped version of her classic 'Shout' which once again entered the Top 10 as did the original. 1993 saw Lulu release an album encompassing a multitude of genres, 'Independence'. This was co-produced together with Bobby Womack, founder of the band The Valentinos and a great music artist and band, London Beat. 'I'm Back For More' came out soon after and was a duet with Bobby Womack. In 1995, Lulu joined the talents of the hugely successful boy band, Take That to perform a duet, 'Relight My Fire'.
Together - the album
Into a new century and Lulu recaptured a whole array of duets - both previous and new in a special album suitably titled 'Together'. Amongst her duets include classics with modern artists like 'To Sir With Love' with Samantha Mumba and 'Shame Shame Shame' with Atomic Kitten. Lulu dueted with Ronan Keating on the Bob Seger tune, 'We've Got Tonight' (this also features on Ronan's album, 'Destination') and to accompany this special album, Lulu featured on her own special television programme 'An Audience With Lulu' in early 2002. Ronan made his guest appearance and he and Lulu sang together 'If Tomorrow Never Comes'.
