     Atomic Kitten - the group

Atomic Kitten are a pop trio of three female members: Natasha Hamilton, Liz McClarnon and Jenny Frost.  The band by the name Atomic Kitten started off back at the end of 1999 in November when they launched their debut single, 'Right Now'.

Atomic Kitten was a concept of the former member of the successful group, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Andy McCluskey.  In 1998, McCluskey had the idea of establishing an all-new female pop group and the search was on to find members!  At one time the whole idea looked remote from ever materialising!

Atomic Kitten originated from another band called Honeyhead.  Atomic Kitten were first called The Automatic Kittens.  See below to see how this particular name came about!  Eventually, The Automatic Kittens became what we now know so well as Atomic Kitten.  Again, read below to find out how this particular name came to be!

The original members of Atomic Kitten in their chart debuting years were Natasha Hamilton, Liz McClarnon and Kerry Katona.  It was Liz McClarnon and Kerry Katona together with Andy McCluskey (who was himself in a group called 'Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark') that set out to form the group back in 1998.  Just before Kerry became 18 she met Liz and they became the best of friends.  Natasha Hamilton joined Atomic Kitten in 1999 to complete the trio.
See Biography for the full story on Atomic Kitten's beginnings.

The name Atomic Kitten derived from the name of the clothing label owned by the group's wardrobe designer, Mary Lamb.  Lamb called her range of designer wear 'Automatic Kitten'.  The group wanted to use this name as their own and this came to be (they were known for a short while as The Automatic Kittens) but Kerry felt it had to be changed...1) 'Automatic Kitten' was such a mouthful and 2) there was a fear that people might get them mixed up with washing up powder names.  So 'Atomic Kitten' it became!

The nicknames of Atomic Kitten include Kittens.  Natasha Hamilton has the nickname 'Tash', Liz McClarnon has the nickname 'Lil' (Liz is another short name).  Jenny Frost has the nickname 'Jen'.

Kerry Katona left Atomic Kitten at the start of 2001.  At the end of 2000 it was revealed that she was to marry Bryan McFadden, one of the members of the all-male pop group, Westlife.  Into 2001, and it was announced that they were going to have a baby this September 2001.  In order to turn her attention to her new family, Kerry decided to leave Atomic Kitten.

Jenny Frost  joined Atomic Kitten at the start of 2001.  Originally she was actually going to be a temporary replacement for Kerry Katona.  Kerry would have been on maternity leave and then rejoin the group.  However, it was eventually decided by Kerry that she should leave and Jenny to become a permanent member instead.

Jenny Frost was previously in another all-female pop group called Precious.  This group formed to take part in the 1999 Eurovision Song Contest.  Precious went on to release an album and a number of singles but the end of 2000 saw Precious diminish.  Jenny was always a close friend of the members of Atomic Kitten and when the group had to select a new replacement for Kerry they thought Jenny was the right choice (and what a brilliant choice they made!)

The Atomic Kitten chart single, 'Eternal Flame' which was released in the UK on the 23rd July 2001.  This sold around 141,000 copies in the first week of its release and another 75,000 in the second.  The Atomic Kitten single not on chart release is 'You Are'.

The Atomic Kitten single in place of 'Eternal Flame' was actually going to be 'Dancing In The Street' but instead 'Eternal Flame' was released and 'Dancing In The Street' took up a B-side position on the 'Eternal Flame' single!

In addition, 'Eternal Flame' was actually going to be a double a-side single with 'Turn Me On' but was dropped in the last minute!

Atomic Kitten spent the most weeks at the UK No.1 singles position with both 'Whole Again' and 'Eternal Flame' in 2001 since the success of Westlife's double A-side offering, 'Seasons In The Sun/I Have A Dream' in 1999.

The Atomic Kitten single, 'The Tide Is High (Get The Feeling)' became a Gold-selling single having sold around 400,000 copies by the end of 2002.  It spent 3 weeks at the UK No.1 chart position and a total of 12 weeks in the UK singles chart.

'The Last Goodbye'/'Be With You' is the first double A-side release from Atomic Kitten.

The Atomic Kitten album, 'Feels So Good' was originally going to be called 'Get The Feeling' (which probably originates from the Kittens' single, 'The Tide Is High (Get The Feeling)') but after Australian superstar, Kylie Minogue wrote a song for the Kittens' new album titled, 'Feels So Good', Atomic Kitten settled on this brand new name.

In the UK best selling singles of 2002 Atomic Kitten had 2 of their singles in the Top 40!  'It's OK!' came out at No.38 while 'The Tide Is High (Get The Feeling)' came out at No.13.

Atomic Kitten first performed ever in early May 1999 at the Paradox Club in Liverpool.  At this time there was only Lil and Kerry.

Cover versions that Atomic Kitten have done include the following:

:: 'Locomotion' - this was originally released by the artist, Little Eva from North Carolina, USA, in 1972.  Called 'The Loco-motion', the song featured in the UK singles chart of that year.  In 1988, top solo artist, Kylie Minogue did her own cover version of 'The Loco-motion' renamed simply 'Locomotion'.  This was Minogue's debut single which scored a top position in the UK singles chart of that year.

:: 'Dancing In The Street' - this was originally released by the artist, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas.  Composed eventually of the members: Martha Reeves, Annette Sterling Beard and Rosalind Ashford (one of the original members: Gloria Williams had left early on) they released 'Dancing In The Street' in 1962.  Written by Marvin Gaye, William Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter, the huge motown upbeat release that was 'Dancing In The Street' was optimised by production experts: Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier and Brian Holland (calling themselves 'Holland/Dozier/Holland').  Martha Reeves and The Vandellas reached a top No.2 US singles chart position back in 1962 with the party single.  It was in 1969 that 'Dancing In The Street' gave Martha Reeves and The Vandellas their UK chart success.  Other music artists to cover 'Dancing In The Street' include: top US singer/songwriter, Neil Diamond on his 'September Morn' album in 1979, huge British music artists: Mick Jagger and David Bowie for the massive charity gig, 'Live Aid' in 1985.

:: 'Eternal Flame' - this was originally released by the Bangles in 1988.

:: 'The Tide Is High (Get The Feeling)' - The 'The Tide Is High' part of this single was originally released by Blondie in 1980 on their album, 'Autoamerican'.
See the People page for more information on the Bangles and Blondie.

Atomic Kitten's first live gig in the new formation with Jen was in mid-August 2001 at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London.
