At the flick of a switch

29/8/2003, 6:45pm BST

Tonight, Atomic Kitten will be joining boyband, Blue (pictured right) to switch on the world famous Blackpool Illuminations!!!  The annual show of lights will last a total of 66 nights until 2nd November 2003 and cover a six mile stretch along the Blackpool Promenade from Starr Gate to Bispham.  The switching on of the lights will take place at around 9:25pm (BST) following around an hour of great music entertainment from Atomic Kitten and Blue and other top music stars: Louise, Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees and Liberty X.  Tonight's special event will be covered by BBC Radio 2 (UK) and will be hosted by DJ, Janice Long (pictured left).  The fun all takes place at the BBC Radio 2 Arena, Central Park, Blackpool, UK.  You can join in the fun at the actual event or catch it on BBC Radio 2 (UK) from 8:30pm (BST) onwards.  This year's Blackpool Illuminations costing some UK£2.4 million are expected to attract over 3.5 million visitors over the period they will be alight and continues an annual tradition dating back from 1912 when the first Illuminations were held in honour of Princess Louise.  Such was the success of the event it was and has been held yearly (except during the world wars).  You can find out more about the Blackpool Illuminations at the Blackpool Tourism website by clicking here.

More new single and album info
27/8/2003, 1:00pm BST
More details have emerged about the new single and album releases from Atomic Kitten.  The new single is still believed to be called 'If You Come To Me' and it has been suggested by another source that the release date will be the 27th October 2003.  Another speculated date has been put around a week later on the 3rd November 2003 - all-in-all we assume the eventual time of release will possibly be around end of October - start of November 2003, but this is still all uncertain and we await firm confirmation of the release dates.  On the new album, which is believed to be released in November 2003, Jen spoke to Popworld of what fans can look forward to and how the Kittens were keeping the best of their own music style and sound: "There's a lot of different elements and different types of music, like R&B and pop, but nothing as heavy as hip hop.  We'll leave 'MC-ing' to Alesha MisTeeq.  She's very good at it - we'd just look silly.  We've got our own fan base.  If we were to come out with a hip hop song, it would be like, 'What are you doing?'  I doubt we will do anything radical unless it's an absolutely brilliant hip hop tune mixed with pop or with a hip hop artist."

Owen releases once potential Kitten single
23/8/2003, 4:45pm BST
Former Take That member and now successful soloist, Mark Owen (pictured) is about to release a second single which was at one point considered a possible single for the Kittens to release.  Following on from his UK No.4 debut single, 'Four Minute Warning', Owen will be coming out with his second single titled, 'Alone Without You' due 20th October 2003.  He revealed how this single was influenced by the vibes of Atomic Kitten's own sound and made him think of giving his penned tune to the Kittens: "It was more of a drumbeat really.  I wrote a song that had the same beat as 'Whole Again' and I thought, I might see if they [Atomic Kitten] wanna record this one."  However Owen is pleased he's kept the tune for his own: "I've reworked the song, which is called 'Alone Without You' now for my album, which will be the next single, so it's a good job that I didn't give them it now."  If you want to know how this new Mark Owen single will sound, it'll be out on the 20th October 2003.

     Lighting up
22/8/2003, 6:30pm BST
On Friday 29th August 2003, Atomic Kitten will be joining a whole host of other stars as another season of the famous Blackpool Illuminations begins.  The Kittens are expected to perform at this special event.  The illuminations will be switched on and joining the Kittens in the BBC Radio 2 Arena in Central Park, Blackpool, UK will also be Blue, Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, Louise and Liberty X.  Blue will be turning on the lights that number in excess of a million and cover some six miles of the Blackpool Promenade.  The lights will remain alight until the 2nd November 2003.  The event is free with a capacity crowd of around 15,000.  You can also catch all the action of the night on BBC Radio 2 (UK) from 8:30pm (BST).  Find out more by visiting the Blackpool Tourism website by clicking here.  The Blackpool Illuminations is a world famous spectacular having started back in 1912 when it was a light show held in honour of Princess Louise.  Such was the success of the event, the city council decided to host the Illuminations every year, and so this has happened except during the two world wars.  Remember, you can check out this brilliant light display from the 29th August until the 2nd November 2003.

     Road safety campaign
20/8/2003, 3:30pm BST
Atomic Kitten will be joining forces with the UK road safety charity, Brake, to promote safety on the roads and to emphasise the large number of fatalities and injuries that occur on the roads.  Brake will be launching its annual Road Safety Week beginning 22nd September 2003 with the focus of the campaign on child pedestrians, the need to slow down and awareness by drivers of these vulnerable groups.  As part of this special week, Atomic Kitten are playing their part by donating each a pair of shoes which will be placed alongside thousands of other pairs - in total around 3,500 - on the pitch of Hull City football club's ground.  The message is very strong reminding us that something like 3,500 fatalities occur on the UK's roads each year and the number of unworn pairs of shoes remind us of the number of people who won't be filling them due to dangers on the roads.  The shoes will then be placed on auction after the Road Safety Week to help raise money for Brake.  Brake is a road safety charity primarily based in the UK which aims to increase awareness of road safety and to aim to cut down on the numbers of road accidents that occur, resulting in either injury or death.  The Road Safety Week is a chance for anybody to get involved in helping to spread the message about road safety and dangers.  You can find out more about Brake and its Road Safety Week by visiting the Brake website.

18/8/2003, 6:30pm BST
Atomic Kitten once again demonstrated their outstanding live performances to a huge sell-out crowd at the Newmarket Friday Evening Meetings gig on the 15th August 2003.  The special series of gigs held at the Newmarket Racecourse in the UK saw many music acts take to the stage.  The Kittens played to a crowd of around 20,000 following an evening's worth of horse racing and became an instant favourite with all the spectators.  Earlier this week, rumours had circulated that the Kittens weren't going to perform at the gig at all but all this was cast aside as they performed brilliantly at Newmarket!!!

     Release date suggestions
18/8/2003, 5:30pm BST
Speculation surrounds the possible release dates for the new single and album from Atomic Kitten.  The next releases mark another milestone in the Kittens' discography as they will be moving onto their third studio album and the new single will be the first material to come off this new album.  A suggested, although speculative date for the new single possibly titled 'If You Come To Me', although this too is still speculative, is the 22nd September 2003.  The album release date is less clear with a possible release late September or early October 2003.  No details on these new releases has been confirmed with certainty, nor officially.  The releases will precede a major UK tour by Atomic Kitten in November-December 2003 - the tour dates can be found on the Tour & Appearances page.  More details will follow as and when they arrive.

     Lil's football passion
11/8/2003, 3:00pm BST
Lil spoke of her passion for football and her favourite football club, Everton, to BBC's Sport Academy.  Her football passion extends right back to early days when she played the game often.  She's also followed Everton all the way and looks to team star, Wayne Rooney as a hero.  She said: "I've been lucky enough to meet Wayne Rooney and he was very, very nice, if a bit quiet.  He's really sweet and fantastic for us.  He's brought a lot of publicity to Everton as well."  On her own play of the game: "I used to play a lot of football but I don't really have time any more.  I was a centre forward before I joined the band, but now I wouldn't be able to play for a team every week."  And on the new football season: "I can't wait for the new football season to start."
